California pet care costs
By the Pet Procedure Cost Editorial Team · Last updated: October 22, 2026
Published California figures from the state-level datasets this site uses: a routine visit averages $89, an emergency exam $180 for a dog, and the median quoted insurance premium is $49/mo for a dog. Procedure prices themselves are published nationally — the procedure guides carry those ranges — so this page collects what is genuinely California-specific.
| California at a glance — published figures | Figure |
|---|---|
| Routine vet visit, average (Lemonade/Banfield) | $89 |
| Emergency exam, dog average (CareCredit) | $180 |
| Emergency exam, cat average (CareCredit) | $190 |
| Insurance premium median, dog (Insurify) | $49/mo |
| Insurance premium median, cat (Insurify) | $25/mo |
| Insurance average, dog (Pawlicy) | $62/mo |
| Insurance average, cat (Pawlicy) | $31/mo |
Within California: the city spread
Pawlicy's California page prices example policies by city (80% reimbursement, unlimited coverage, $500 deductible): a 6-month Golden Retriever runs $51–$75/mo in Los Angeles, $45–$67 in San Diego, and $38–$51 in Sacramento; a 6-month Chihuahua $30–$46 / $26–$41 / $22–$31 on the same grid. Forbes Advisor, as reported by GlobalPETS, puts California's average vet visit at $71.95 — the highest state figure in its table, though below the $89 Banfield-sourced average above; the two measure different visit mixes and are printed as published. California also anchors the top of CareCredit's imaging geography: its dog X-ray and MRI state averages sit near the national top (Hawaii is highest, at $383 and $4,072).
Why the two insurance figures disagree
As in the other state guides, the two premium columns measure different books of business. Insurify’s California medians — $49/mo for a dog, $25/mo for a cat — are medians of new quotes across its 250,000-plus quote dataset. Pawlicy’s averages — $62/mo and $31/mo — describe policies already in force, which skew older and more claims-experienced. A new buyer should budget from the median; the average is the better picture of what the same coverage tends to cost a few renewals in.
Reading the city grid
The city examples above are the same two puppies on the same policy terms (80% reimbursement, unlimited coverage, $500 deductible) in three California cities, which makes the grid a clean measure of pure geography. The 6-month Golden Retriever’s range rises from $38–$51/mo in Sacramento to $45–$67 in San Diego to $51–$75 in Los Angeles — about $13–$24 a month more in Los Angeles than in Sacramento at both ends of the range, for identical coverage on an identical dog. The Chihuahua grid shows the same staircase at lower numbers ($22–$31 Sacramento, $26–$41 San Diego, $30–$46 Los Angeles). It is the insurance echo of what the visit and imaging figures say: California’s coastal metros price veterinary care — and therefore claims — at the top of the national range, and premiums follow the claims.
Emergency care, in state context
CareCredit’s California emergency exam averages — $180 for a dog, $190 for a cat — are the exam fee alone, before any diagnostics or treatment, and they sit well above the $135 national dog average CareCredit publishes. An emergency visit that proceeds to imaging or surgery builds from that base at California prices; the state’s dog X-ray and MRI averages sit near the top of CareCredit’s state table, behind only Hawaii ($383 and $4,072 respectively).
How to use these numbers
State averages orient a budget; they do not quote a procedure. A California owner pricing a TPLO should start from the national published range ($3,500–$5,000) and the city-vs-rural split Pawlicy publishes (major cities $4,000–$6,000), then take the state context from this page: California's emergency exam and visit averages sit above the national dog average of $135, which is the best published signal of where the state sits on the national price map.
