How much does a routine vet visit cost?
The wellness exam itself — before vaccines, bloodwork, or anything the exam turns up — runs $56–$129 for a dog and $57–$130 for a cat in CareCredit/Synchrony's 2025 procedural cost study. A second published read (Spot, citing CareCredit) puts it at $70–$174 for dogs and $53–$124 for cats; different study vintages, both printed here rather than blended.

What drives the price
Geography is the driver the sources name first: Spot's checkup guide says urban and high-cost-of-living areas run consistently higher, and the state table below bears that out — a $26 spread between the cheapest and most expensive state averages. What happens during the visit matters as much: vaccinations due that day, bloodwork or a urinalysis, and any same-day treatment are all charged on top of the exam fee. The ASPCA's annual chart puts a full year of routine medical care (vaccines and wellness visits together) at $225 for a dog and $160 for a cat.
An emergency exam costs roughly double a routine one before any treatment — and diagnostics stack fast from there.
