How much does hernia repair surgery for dogs cost?

“Hernia repair” spans the cheapest operation on this site and one of the most expensive, depending entirely on the type. Spot Pet Insurance publishes average surgery costs by type: an umbilical hernia at $150–$700, an inguinal hernia at $2,000–$2,500, a perineal hernia at $1,500–$5,000, and a diaphragmatic hernia at $4,000–$8,000. At the minor end, Embrace Pet Insurance puts most minor hernia repairs, including anesthetics, at $150–$400.

What drives the price

Type is the dominant driver, as the table shows — an umbilical repair is a short closure of a small defect (often added to a spay or neuter under the same anesthesia — see the spay & neuter guide), while a diaphragmatic hernia is emergency chest surgery with hospitalization. After type: whether tissue is trapped or damaged (a strangulated hernia becomes an emergency, priced more like the emergency cases), whether one side or both are repaired, and the pre-surgical lab work, which Embrace notes is excluded from its minor-repair figure. The named-clinic price above also shows how far a published general-practice price can sit below an insurer’s national average for the same named operation — another reason this site prints sources side by side instead of blending them.

Some small umbilical hernias in puppies close on their own and are simply monitored, while others need repair — which applies is a veterinary judgment, and a hernia that suddenly becomes painful or firm is an emergency. This page prices the operations; it does not recommend one.
