How much does microchipping cost?
A one-time procedure with a tight published range: $38–$87 for a dog and $30–$80 for a cat in CareCredit/Synchrony's 2025 study. The ASPCA's 2021 chart lists a flat $20, and low-cost clinics publish $15–$40.
| Microchipping — published figures | Figure |
|---|---|
| Dog — CareCredit 2025 study | $38–$87 |
| Cat — CareCredit 2025 study | $30–$80 |
| ASPCA chart (2021), both species | $20 |
| Vetco (Petco) published list prices | $38 Gig Harbor, WA · $40 Fairfax, VA |
| Miami-Dade County Animal Services (municipal) | $15 |
Two cost notes from the sources: shelter adoption fees often already include microchipping (CareCredit's cat guide), so an adopted pet may need no separate purchase; and the chip itself is the whole procedure cost — the published figures do not separate a registration fee, which varies by registry and is not priced in the sources we read.
Microchipping is a $20 line in the ASPCA's initial-cost table — see what the rest of year one costs.
