How much does bloat (GDV) surgery for dogs cost?

Bloat surgery comes in two very different forms. The emergency operation — untwisting the stomach (GDV) and tacking it in place — is published by Great Pet Care at $3,000–$6,000, while Animalia puts emergency surgery at an average of $4,000–$8,000. The planned, preventive version of the same tacking procedure (a prophylactic gastropexy, often done with a spay or neuter) is published by Great Pet Care at $800–$2,500, with Animalia giving a $1,400 average.

Gastropexy — published figures by sourceFigure
Emergency GDV surgery (Great Pet Care)$3,000–$6,000
Emergency GDV surgery, average (Animalia)$4,000–$8,000
Preventive (prophylactic) gastropexy (Great Pet Care)$800–$2,500
Preventive gastropexy, average (Animalia)$1,400

What drives the price

Great Pet Care lists the emergency-bill drivers plainly: how much stabilization a dog needs before surgery (fluids, pain medication), whether the spleen or part of the stomach has to be removed, and how long the hospital stay runs. Emergency cases are treated at emergency hospitals, whose exam fees and overnight rates sit above general practice — see the emergency vet cost guide and the hospitalization cost guide. For the preventive operation, the drivers are the technique (laparoscopic vs open) and whether it is combined with a spay or neuter under one anesthesia — compare the spay & neuter guide.

GDV is a minutes-matter emergency, and which dogs should get a preventive gastropexy is a veterinary decision — large, deep-chested breeds are the usual candidates. Insurance note from Great Pet Care: many policies cover emergency GDV surgery, but preventative procedures are usually not covered. This page prices the operations; it does not recommend one.
